Fall Weeklong Retreat in the Mountains

October 6-13

7 nights   $420 ($210 deposit)   Dana

Autumn is a wonderful time of year to do a retreat at SouthernDharma, the leaves are changing color and the air is still warm enough to camp. A weeklong retreat allows for a deepening of practice that supports our spiritual lives and has a definite carry over to our daily meditation at home.

During this retreat, Vipassana Meditation will be our foundation practice: being present with the arising and passing away of the mind-body experience. Cultivation of Pure Awareness supports knowing such experience without being caught in self-identification with it. The spaciousness of Pure Awareness helps us to be less reactive to difficult sensations, thoughts and emotions. This process of opening non-judgmentally and compassionately, moves from the practice period to the whole of our lives and contributes to a profound sense of peace and harmony.

The retreat will include instruction in sitting, standing and walking meditation, dharma talks, and opportunity for individual meetings with the teachers. Chanting from various spiritual traditions and optional yoga will also be offered.

The retreat will be held in silence.

Barbara Brodsky is a dharma teacher who leads retreats worldwide. She is the founder and guiding teacher of Deep Spring Center in Michigan which offers vipassana classes, retreats, and dharma discussions. She is an ordained interfaith minister. She has been practicing meditation since 1960 and teaching since 1989. Her teaching draws from both Buddhist and Quaker traditions. Her Buddhist training is in the Theravadin and Dzogchen traditions. Barbara became totally deaf in 1972. Living in silence has greatly influenced her life and teaching as have many years of involvement in nonviolent action for social change.

John Orr received training in Thailand and India and was a Buddhist monk for eight years. Since 1980 he has led retreats around the country. He currently lives in the Durham/Chapel Hill area.
