During the retreat season, Southern Dharma uses one or two volunteers at a time to help
with the work of the retreat. The work consists of four hours assisting
the cook mostly in the mornings and other tasks such as cleaning during the
retreat. On non-retreat days, the work consists of cleaning, mowing, gardening, or
some other such task. The retreat fee is waived for volunteers.
Though a "volunteer," there is compensation: food, lodging, and the opportunity to attend the retreat during afternoons and evenings. If you would like to help Southern Dharma host a successful retreat while using your spare time for practice, this might be a good opportunity. Volunteers must be in excellent health, able and eager to do physical work, excited about living without city-life amenities, and desirous to live in silence and solitude. This is not a job for anyone with physical or psychological challenges. Preference will be given to individuals who have participated in a retreat at Southern Dharma or a similar retreat center and who have an ongoing meditative practice. Volunteers may come to Southern Dharma for as little time as one retreat. Please apply early so that we can coordinate the volunteer schedule well before your desired time to volunteer.
